This is my 6th 1st generation Montero, had my first in in Sierra Leon, West Africa Pajero thereso I got a pretty good feeling for them and I don't believe there are any major problems.

This can easily be converted to show quality, left as the daily driver it is, or somewhere in between. The first usually last aboutand the latter is reccomended for replacement every 60, miles. The currently installed ecm works fine, but i also have another, which is a plug and play and works just as well.

I don't remember which, but one is a rebuilt that I purchsed in which has solid state, not oil filled innards, so should last much longer. Runs and drives nice, but has a battery issue right now so had to jump for video, I may or may not replace it, will update if I do. I'm selling it cuz my wife and I just don't 4 Wheel much anymore and want to get something like a transit van to convert to camper.

Many extra parts off another and awhich I will list below. The threads for the o2 sensor in exhaust manifold are stripped so has to be tightened periodically or makes for very noisy ride! I'm 6'7" and cracked steering wheel housing by cruise control with my knee, but the cruise does still work, just a little awkward to activate. Interior shows age but it's livable and I do have extra rear bench seat as well.

Original carpet, but rough and tons of dog hair, so you'll probably want to use as pattern.

Security Check

Center console stash cover chewed up, I have replacement but it's blue. All original good glass, deeply, but legally tinted including visor tint at top of windshield. Rear windows slide freely, don't leak, but also don't lock.

The photos, video and feature and parts list below should tell what you need to know, but I welcome any questions. Complete skid plate package, including chin guard, and i think a couple extras. If you've ever owned a gen 3, help us help others find the right gen 3 for them. Tell us why you like d your gen 3 and why you didn't like it. What should someone know before choosing a gen 3 over an older truck? Any deal breakers they should know about? When should they walk away from a deal?

And what special equipment or mods warrant a little extra elbow grease? Pictures if you've got em, please! I'll be using this info to build buyer's guides for the guys to help them grow their business. More business means more revenue. And that means more budget for new parts.

Thanks in advance! If you're new to the Gen 3 Montero, the main issue is there's very little aftermarket support if you're looking to do an aggressive build. Instead they focused on AWD rally cars with Subaru in their sights. This not only made the Montero a wall flower, it squelched any incentive for aftermarket development for both the Sport and full-size platform, a good thing for used purchase price and the bane for anyone looking to modify.

Stock, the Montero already has a robust drive-train, some models with standard limited slip differential and respectable nine-inch ground clearance. The driving position is best in its class, its outward visibility is terrific, rearward by comparison is great and the cabin is well-appointed and thought out with one of the largest sunroofs offered. Apparently Mitsu figured the American market would stick to Jeeps, leaving the Gen 3 Montero with plastic bumper caps and a departure angle rivaling UPS trucks.

Aftermarket wheel offerings are limited given some models' air pressure sensors and its huge center hub and the V6 has a tendency to pressure oil through the rear main. Offroadmuch Member Posts: 7. Step one is to just take it out and drive it. I purchased mine to go camping, shooting, off exploring mild overlanding and just getting away for a while.

My criteria were: 1. Not rock crawling and keeping up with jeeps with 35 and 37" wheels. If I air down a little, pick a good line, know my limitations I do fine out there. This was fine for me.Welcome to DodgeRaider. If you've ever owned a gen 1, help us help others find the right gen 1 for them. Tell us why you like d your gen 1 and why you didn't like it. What should someone know before choosing a gen 1 over a newer truck?

Any deal breakers they should know about? When should they walk away from a deal? And what special equipment or mods warrant a little extra elbow grease? Pictures if you've got em, please! I'll be using this info to build buyer's guides for the guys to help them grow their business. More business means more revenue. And that means more budget for new parts. Thanks in advance! I can only speak to my preferences and limited experience, but here are a couple of things I'd offer as opinion on the Gen 1s shortcomings: The four cylinder model with the stock carburetor is difficult to keep in tune.

A Weber helps solve that problem, but may not be an option in states with strict emission regulations. The V6 motor is particularly vulnerable to any decreased efficiency in cooling, which generally will result in head gasket and warping issues. Keep that radiator clean in and outuse the right thermostat, and watch your temp. The V6 will drink oil - valve guide seals are a common culprit, but you're almost certain to need a top-off between oil changes even if you have good compression and no visible leaks.

Tapping valves is a good sign you're down a quart. The radio is in an inconvenient location. I updated to a BT head unit with a remote to alleviate taking my eyes off the road or trail. Parts are getting harder to find - there's still some NOS out there and some aftermarket to choose from, but trips to the junkyard could yield quicker results and might be the only option in some cases.

This is not an investment. If you're considering a Gen 1 as something that's going to be worth more than you've put into it at some point, move along. But that's not why I got into it, anyway.

Now to the good stuff: This rig, for its age, weight and powertrain, is absurdly capable.

Terrific engineering. Overall, really dependable - with good maintenance, I've never been left stuck, on or off the road. I've owned a Gen 1 sinceand a Gen 2 from to Relatively inexpensive and easy to work on - there's room under the hood and with only one or two exceptions, everything is accessible. For those with a love for the boxy SUV look, the Gen 1 is a standout.

Rare to see another one on the road or trail, and if you do, you probably know them. Remarkably affordable - the other side of the "collector's item" coin above. You can find a Gen 1 and build your suburban warrior, rugged overlander or custom rock crawler for a fraction of the cost of other makes.

It isn't a particularly complicated truck, so someone else has almost certainly managed any issue you come across, and they're eager to share. As long as you check the FSM first.
